BASIC BALLROOM: FOXTROT & SWING
This is our most popular class. It combines FOXTROT & JITTERBUG- and is our introduction to partner dancing, especially designed for beginners. Learn to feel comfortable on the dance floor, how to lead and follow. The basics in this class are utilized in all dances. The Foxtrot is your basic upright dance, danced to moderate speed big band sounds and jazz standards. The Jitterbug is a basic form of swing. A great place to start!
BEGINNERS learn faster when they meet at least twice a week. For this reason, the Basic Ballroom class meets twice a week for three weeks (6 classes) |
WALTZ
SLOW BALLROOM STYLE- Learn to float around the dance floor with the greatest of ease! Waltz is the classic wedding dance. Danced in ballrooms, country western bars, contra dances and many social events, it’s easy and fun.
VIENNESE STYLE- An exhilarating fast turning style, beautiful to watch. A dance for more advanced dancers. |
SWING
Swing dancing was invented in the late 20’s. Numerous versions have developed from the original dance. Learn all the styles! It’s so versatile, you can dance it to big band, blues, oldies and country-western music!
LINDY HOP was invented in the late 20’s. It is the original style of swing. Because it came right after the Charleston, it has a lot of kicking steps. It experienced a revival in the 90’s. It is based on 8 count patterns with many variations.
EAST COAST SWING has many underarm turns while the feet keep the basic rhythm. It is danced to a wide variety of music: oldies, Big Band and Country Western. It is based on 6 count patterns. The single rhythm version, also known as JITTERBUG is the style taught in the Basic Ballroom class and in the Basic Swing class. The double rhythm version, also known as ROCK N ROLL was popular in the 50s. It has great style and fancy footwork, lots of fun! A triple rhythm version uses a shuffle step and is sometimes incorporated into Lindy Hop.
WEST COAST SWING is a sophisticated form of swing which developed in California from the original Lindy Hop. It is danced to Blues, Pop 40, Disco and some Country Western music. Because the leader and follower dance different steps often to different rhythms at the same time, it is a challenging dance to learn. There is a lot of room for improvisation in this dance.
ST. LOUIS SHAG is a fun kicking dance done to fast Jump Blues music. It is often danced in conjunction with the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug.
BALBOA & COLLEGIATE SHAG are both vintage styles of swing danced to fast music and danced in a closed dance position.
