6 Things to Consider when Learning to Dance

These guidelines will help you to have a successful, rewarding experience learning to dance. These are practical tips discovered from teaching hundreds of students each year.

The best way to learn is to stand up and try it.
The best time to learn is NOW.

Anyone who can walk can learn to dance.

Dancing, including rhythm, is an acquired skill. Just like learning to play an instrument, most people are not proficient after just a couple of hours of instruction. You have to be willing to invest some of your time, money and effort. And the process is fun!

A partner is not necessary.

Dancing is a great way to meet people of both genders.  Group dance classes and dance parties offer the opportunity to widen your social circle.  In a good studio, singles and most couples will rotate partners in the classes and during mixers at dances. Changing partners actually works to improve your dancing as well as giving you the chance to get to know people.

Studying more than one dance at a time may speed the learning process.

Social dancing encompasses many different types of dance, each with its own style.  Skills from one dance style can overlap another.  Scheduling, personal taste and other factors may dictate which dance you start with, but there are certain foundational dances such as the foxtrot, the rumba and the jitterbug. A good teacher can suggest a dance program which presents a logical order of learning.

Good technique is why some dance partners are easier to dance with than others.

The athlete who has invested the time to acquire proper technique is more likely to excel than the individual who wings it. So it is with dancing, especially because we dance with a partner.  Knowledge about movement (i.e. technique) is what allows the dancer to move comfortably and effectively.  Beginners tend to be overly concerned with learning steps, not realizing that it is technique that permits them to do the movement. A few steps done with grace and style is preferable to stumbling through many complex steps. Good technique allows us to go beyond the steps, express the music and feel a connection with our partner.

There is an art to leading and following.

Men start with a disadvantage because often they are not already familiar with dancing. They may feel awkward and don’t want to look incompetent or foolish in front of women. If a man is willing to learn the physical skills necessary, he will reap great rewards. It is like learning any other sport. For women, the art of following is not passive; it is an active engagement with specific skills. The couple forms a team; this is teamwork. There is no ”faking it” in dancing. Your partner always knows.

Anyone can become a proficient dancer with good instruction and repetition.

Practice can overcome a lack of talent. The better the teacher, the better the information and the better you’re going to learn it.
Students are saying.....
“I decided to take your class because I wanted to try something new. Now, for me, learning how to dance means learning how to relax and interact with others. In your class, I do not feel a pressure to be perfect. I can enjoy music and moving my body along with it.  Thanks for being a cheering and friendly teacher.”
